What’s changing
We are moving from updating Windows on the third Thursday of each month to updating every day until your device is fully patched.
Why the change
Microsoft releases most updates on the second Tuesday of each month. We hold these for 7 days to make sure there are no problematic patches. Under the old once-a-month approach, devices that were off, travelling, or busy could be missed and might stay unpatched. Daily attempts lift compliance and cut risk to your business.
How it will work
- Microsoft publishes updates on the second Tuesday of each month.
- We wait 7 days. This gives time for any faulty updates to be withdrawn and for us to review.
- From day 8, our system tries to install the updates on your devices every day until each device succeeds.
- Once your device is patched, it will not receive more Microsoft updates that month unless Microsoft releases a critical zero-day fix.
What is a zero-day
A zero-day is a serious security flaw that is being actively exploited. If Microsoft issues a zero-day fix, we will install it promptly to protect you.
Impact to you
- Most updates install quietly in the background.
- Some updates need a restart. You may see a prompt. Please save work and restart when asked.
- After your device is patched for the month, there is nothing more to do.
- You will be able to post-pone a reboot to your computer up to 3 times.
Benefits
- Faster protection against new threats.
- Fewer devices missed.
- Same monthly volume of updates, just applied more reliably.
Key points
- We hold updates for 7 days, then apply daily until successfully installed.
- No extra updates after success that month, unless there is a zero-day.
- You might be asked to restart. That is normal.
